Drums master Steve Gadd is among the most respected and emulated musicians in the world – an anomaly whose panache for playing precisely what a piece of music requires plus bringing signature taste, style and energy to the proceedings has resulted in hundreds of the most rhythmically exhilarating moments in recorded music history, across genres. Amazingly, as he was laying down custom classic grooves for “pop” records such as Paul Simon’s “50 Ways to Leave Your Lover,” Rickie Lee Jones’ “Chuck E.’s In Love,” Van McCoy’s “The Hustle,” Barbra Streisand & Barry Gibb’s “Guilty,” and Grover Washington, Jr. f/ Bill Withers’ “Just the Two of Us,” he was simultaneously recording landmark jazz-rock fusion masterpieces such as Bob James’ adaptation of Modest Mussorgsky’s “Night On Bald Mountain,” Steely Dan’s “Aja,” The Brecker Brothers’ “Night Flight” (the late Michael Brecker’s first recorded composition), Al Jarreau’s “Spain,” and Chick Corea’s “Nite Sprite.” Indeed, the acoustic jazz Gadd played on Corea’s LPs The Mad Hatter, My Spanish Heart, Friends and Three Quartets stands as among the piano legend’s finest hours. Corea has dubbed Gadd, “The Master of Creative Grooves.” Couple all of that with his charisma and drive as a live performer for artists from Eric Clapton to James Taylor and it is clear: no other drummer has impacted jazz and popular music like Steve Gadd. Nobody.
